Homeless veiw essays
Homeless veiw essays Right now my view of homeless people is those who dont have the mental capacity to take care of themselves and therefore they end up living off of other peoples change on the streets. I often view them without a family and no real initiative to be successful or seek comfort in their lives. It seems that many are alcoholics and drug abusers and are desperate to get those things no matter what the cost. They appear very sad and lost, like all they really need is someone to tell them they are important and can make a difference in the world. I think that they have a very carefree nature and dont take other peoples opinions into consideration at all. They could care less what others think, and for that they are willing to lay and sleep in places we wouldnt imagine even walking on. A lot of them seem to be struggling through life and are taking all the wrong choices of changing their lives whether its because of mental issues or just laziness. As much as I want to believe they are there t rying to get money to pay for a rsum, I often believe theyre finding all the money they can to buy things that will only make their problems worse. After reading this article I have definitely developed a new sympathy for those living on the streets. I had always thought of homeless people as drunks who dont want to work or achieve anything in life, but I have now realized that the upper class citizens dont allow these people to get much of a second chance. They feel uncomfortable and embarrassed of the homeless and only think negatively of them. If being called worthless and being looked down upon is what these people experience daily, I can understand why they dont want to get jobs or start over. They eventually believe they are worthless and unproductive because that is what they are told; they arent given that encouragement or love that people need to experience in order to gain in...

Ponce de Leon and the Fountain of Youth
Ponce de Leon and the Fountain of Youth Juan Ponce de Leà ³n (1474-1521) was a Spanish explorer and conquistador. He was one of the first settlers of Puerto Rico and was the first Spaniard to (officially) visit Florida. Hes best remembered, however, for his search for the legendary Fountain of Youth. Did he really search for it, and if so, did he find it? The Fountain of Youth and other Myths During the Age of Discovery, many men got caught up in the search for legendary places. Christopher Columbus was one: he claimed to have found the Garden of Eden on his Third Voyage. Other men spent years in the Amazon jungle searching for the lost city of El Dorado, the Golden Man. Still others searched for giants, the land of the Amazons and the fabled Kingdom of Prester John. These myths were very pervasive and in the excitement of the discovery and exploration of the New World it did not seem impossible to Ponce De Leons contemporaries to find such places. Juan Ponce de Leà ³n Juan Ponce de Leà ³n was born in Spain in 1474 but came to the New World no later than 1502. By 1504 he was well-known as a skilled soldier and had seen much action fighting the natives of Hispaniola. He was given some prime land and soon became a wealthy planter and rancher. Meanwhile, he was surreptitiously exploring the nearby island of Puerto Rico (then known as San Juan Bautista). He was granted rights to settle the island and he did so, but later lost the island to Diego Columbus (son of Christopher) following a legal ruling in Spain. Ponce de Leon and Florida Ponce de Leà ³n knew he had to start over, and followed rumors of a rich land to the northwest of Puerto Rico. He took his first trip to Florida in 1513. It was on that trip that the land was named Florida by Ponce himself, because of the flowers there and the fact that it was near Easter time when he and his shipmates first saw it. Ponce de Leà ³n was awarded the rights to settle Florida. He returned in 1521 with a group of settlers, but they were driven off by angry natives and Ponce de Leà ³n was wounded by a poisoned arrow. He died shortly thereafter. Ponce de Leon and the Fountain of Youth Any records that Ponce de Leà ³n kept of his two voyages have been long since lost to history. The best information concerning his journeys comes to us from the writings of Antonio de Herrera y Tordesillas, who was appointed Chief Historian of the Indies in 1596, decades after Ponce de Leons journeys. Herreras information was likely third-hand at best. He mentions the Fountain of Youth in reference to Ponces first voyage to Florida in 1513. Heres what Herrera had to say about Ponce de Leà ³n and the Fountain of Youth: Juan Ponce overhauled his ships, and although it seemed to him that he had worked hard he decided to send out a ship to identify the Isla de Bimini even though he did not want to, for he wanted to do that himself. He had an account of the wealth of this island (Bimini) and especially that singular Fountain that the Indians spoke of, that turned men from old men into boys. He had not been able to find it because of the shoals and currents and contrary weather. He sent, then, Juan Pà ©rez de Ortubia as captain of the ship and Antà ³n de Alaminos as pilot. They took two Indians to guide them over the shoalsâ⬠¦The other ship (that had been left to search for Bimini and the Fountain) arrived and reported that Bimini (most likely Andros Island) had been found, but not the Fountain. à Ponces Search for the Fountain of Youth If Herreras account is to be believed, then Ponce spared a handful of men to search for the island of Bimini and to look around for the fabled fountain while they were at it. Legends of a magical fountain that could restore youth had been around for centuries and Ponce de Leà ³n had no doubt heard them. Perhaps he heard rumors of such a place in Florida, which would not be surprising: there are dozens of thermal springs and hundreds of lakes and ponds there. But was he actually searching for it? Its unlikely. Ponce de Leà ³n was a hardworking, practical man who intended to find his fortune in Florida, but not by finding some magical spring. On no occasion did Ponce de Leon personally set off through the swamps and forests of Florida deliberately seeking the Fountain of Youth. Still, the notion of a Spanish explorer and conquistador seeking a legendary fountain captured the public imagination, and the name Ponce de Leon will forever be tied to the Fountain of Youth and Florida. To this day, Florida spas, hot springs and even plastic surgeons associate themselves with the Fountain of Youth. Source Fuson, Robert H. LAW 2112 EUROPEAN SINGLE MARKET Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
LAW 2112 EUROPEAN SINGLE MARKET - Essay Example EU sets out three types of relationships between member states and the EU, namely: exclusive competences, shared competences, and fields in which EU law cannot exclude national legislatures from making law. (Damian Chalmers et al.p.184-5) The primacy principle applies here and it was first proclaimed in the case of Costa. EU law takes precedence over national law. The Costa v ENEL case was concerned with the nationalisation of the Italian electricity industry, whose bills Costa refused to pay in protest since he said its creation breached EU law. The Italian Constitutional court said that subscription to the EU was an ordinary law, subject, like any other, to repeal. The ECJ ruling overturned this, saying (1) that upon the EEC Treaty coming into force a ââ¬Å"new legal orderâ⬠came to exist, which caused EU law to enter into domestic law and that domestic courts are ââ¬Å"bound to enforceâ⬠it. And (2) that ââ¬Å"transfer from [member statesââ¬â¢] domestic legal syste ms to a Community legal systemâ⬠meant a loss of sovereignty and hence any subsequent act made in breach of EU law would be ineffective, since EU law would prevail. It was held by the ECJ: To allow national laws to be effective even when they conflict with EU law would frustrate the aim of creating a truly common market. It is implied that EU law is supreme over national law: otherwise it would be meaningless to say that regulations are binding and directly applicableâ⬠¦as national legislation could just nullify its effects. Law stemming from the treaty is an ââ¬Å"independent source of lawâ⬠. This ruling established that member states couldnââ¬â¢t deviate from EC treaties without prior permission. It also established that national high courts couldnââ¬â¢t determine incompatibility of national and EU law without consulting ECJ. This principle was neatly illustrated in Internationale Handelsgesellschaft v. Einfur in which the Court ruled that EU law takes precede nce over all forms of national law, including national constitutional law. ââ¬Å"Therefore the validity of a Community measure or its effect within a member state cannot be affected by allegations that it runs counter to either fundamental rights as formulated by the constitution of that State or the principles of a national constitutional structureâ⬠Article 288 TFEU provides: To exercise the Unionââ¬â¢s competences, the institutions shall adopt regulations, directives, decisions, recommendations and opinions. A regulation shall have general application. It shall be binding in its entirety and directly applicable in all Member States. A directive shall be binding, as to the result to be achieved, upon each Member State to which it is addressed, but shall leave to the national authorities the choice of form and methods. A decision shall be binding in its entirety upon those to whom it is addressed. Recommendations and opinions shall have no binding force. Article 19 TEU pro vides: The Court of Justice of the European Union shall include the Court of Justice, the General Court and specialised courts. It shall ensure that in the interpretation and application of this Treaty the law is observed. Member States shall provide remedies sufficient to ensure effective legal protection in the fields covered by Union law. It follows that the law stemming from

HOW MIGHT THE HOLISTIC MODEL HELP MEET THE MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS OF Essay
HOW MIGHT THE HOLISTIC MODEL HELP MEET THE MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS OF OLDER PEOPLE - Essay Example The holistic model encourages nurses to constantly look for factors and relations that affect the complexity of health and illness (Keady & Watts 2010). Application of this model in mental health care nursing requires involvement of the whole personsââ¬â¢ wellbeing and the overall quality of life style with the focus of the nursing interventions directed towards restoring overall harmony with a sense of purpose and meaning in an individualââ¬â¢s life. The patient under nursing care is considered a co-participant in health promotion, working closely with the nurse to determine necessary and appropriate interventions over their health condition. Multidisciplinary team assessments and treatment of older people with mental health problems facilitates implementation of the holistic approach to care for and meet the complex health and social needs presented by this group of patients (Gask 2009). According to Corry (2005), the need for holistic approach in the care of people with ment al illnesses has been illustrated by a report associating poor physical care with the high rate of deaths among such people in UK. Studies have shown that people with severe mental illness are at greater risk of physical illness attributed to their lifestyle factors and mental condition. Further studies have shown that despite the UK governmentââ¬â¢s recommendations for physical health assessment among people with severe mental health problems majority of the patients lack any health history or lifestyle management plan (Corry 2005). The physical health of people with severe mental illness especially among the older people remains a major concern with evidence indicating that psychiatric patients have high rates of physical illness that go undetected contributing to increased premature deaths (Neno, Aveyard & Heath 2008). In addition, most people with mild mental illnesses are neglected, with little or no focus in helping them overcome such illness. Older people experience mental illness that is complex, enduring and debilitating and sometimes age with long-standing mental health needs. Older people with enduring mental health problems have several needs requiring professional care including the long-term effects of high doses of psychotropic medication, the erosion of a personââ¬â¢s social skills and ability to adhere to positive healthy life approaches, high use of alcohol and other substance abuse (Keady & Watts 2010). Other issues arising from the application of the non-holistic approach include confusion of some symptoms for aspects of mental illness, including symptoms common in old age such as anoxia, pain, constipation and weight loss. Application of the Holistic Approach or Model All the discussed needs must be addressed amicably if improved mental health and quality of life were to be realized in this group of people hence the need for the holistic approach in managing such needs. A holistic approach is able to integrate physical needs, social, environmental, economic and psychological needs in managing mental illnesses among the older people (Keady & Watts 2010). Through the holistic approach mental health nurses should focus on connecting with the older people and families in their distress, provide security, create trust and good relationship where the people can confident in finding meaning and truth about their situation. In this case, skilled,

Immanuel Kant Essay Example for Free
Immanuel Kant Essay HUMEââ¬â¢S FORK David Hume divides knowledge into two classes: ââ¬Ërelations of ideasââ¬â¢ (i. e. tautologies) and ââ¬Ëmatters of factââ¬â¢ (i. e. empirical statements). His book concludes (on p. 165) with the following paragraph: ââ¬Å"When we run over libraries, persuaded of these principles, what havoc must we make? If we take in our hand any volume; of divinity or school metaphysics, for instance; let us ask, Does it contain any abstract reasoning concerning quantity of number? No. Does it contain any experimental reasoning concerning matter of fact or existence? No. Commit it then to the flames: for it can contain nothing but sophistry and illusion. â⬠LOGICAL POSITIVISM Humeââ¬â¢s Fork was updated by modern logical positivists (such as A. J. Ayer, Antony Flew and Gilbert Ryle) who proposed the Verification Principle. This claims that sentences are only meaningful if they are tautologies (which are true because of the definitions of the terms involved, e. g.a square has four sides, six is bigger than four), or if they are in some way empirically verifiable (i. e. connected with actual experience, e. g. Harold lost at Hastings, electrons are both particles and waves). Any other statements will be meaningless, because their truth is not decided by either definitions or evidence. According to Ayer, this makes discussion about religion and morality meaningless. Religious statements like God is love are not false, they are incapable of being either true or false. SIX IMPORTANT CONCEPTS Area Term a priori Meaning Knowable before experience, through thought alone Empirical; known through experience has to be true (in all possible worlds) capable of being either true or false tautologies; statements concerned only with meanings of words statements concerned with information about the world Example five is bigger than four Problems Can anything be known without experience? (e. g. maths). Could you know something about the world a priori? Could someone (e. g. God) know everything a priori? Is it possible that all truths are necessary, even empirical ones? Or is it possible that there is no such thing as a necessary truth? It may be arbitrary which terms are definitions, and which are claims about the world. We might reorganise a language so that the analytic truth became synthetic, and vice versa. Epistemology a posteriori necessary Metaphysics contingent analytic Language synthetic cars have four wheels air is a gas air contains oxygen thereââ¬â¢s a stone in my shoe triangles have three sides Hume and the Logical Positivists believe that these terms fall strictly into two groups: a) a priori-necessary-analytic, and b) a posteriori-contingent-synthetic. This means that if something is necessarily true, this is because it is true by definition, and can be known by thinking about it. If a statement is about the real world, then it could be false, and you need experience to know it. (This would immediately rule out the Ontological Argument for God). These empiricists claim that a priori synthetic truths are impossible, whereas rationalists like Kant think you can know things about the world just by thinking about them (e. g. maths). APPLICATION TO RELIGION Statements are only meaningful (it is claimed) if they are true by definition, or if they are empirical. So which group do statements about religion fall into? If they are only true by definition, then outsiders can ignore them because religion is just an arbitrary game like chess. If they are empirically verifiable, then sceptical philosophers can demand to see some relevant evidence. Flewââ¬â¢s Gardener Parable (p. 225) is a demand for evidence. If none can be offered, then the claim is meaningless (not ââ¬Ëfalseââ¬â¢). DEFENCES OF RELIGION The most basic defence is to deny empiricism (consider the views of Plato, Anselm, Descartes and Kant). Logical Positivism can be attacked. Its main problems are 1) the Verification Principle canââ¬â¢t be stated clearly it is either so precise that it eliminates sensible conversation, or so vague that it allows religious language; 2) the Verification Principle must itself be either a tautology or empirically verifiable; 3) a sentence like God is love can be proved meaningful by connecting it very vaguely and remotely with some empirical observation. BRAITHWAITEââ¬â¢S DEFENCE Braithwaite (following the later Wittgenstein) claims that language is meaningful, not if it passes the Verification Principle, but if it has an appropriate use in actual life. The main use of religious language is to express the intentions of believers. In Braithwaiteââ¬â¢s view this is primarily a moral intention. Because a sentence like God is love is part of a way of life in which the speaker is committing themselves to live by love, the sentence is meaningful. HICKââ¬â¢S DEFENCE (ââ¬ËESCHATOLOGICAL VERIFICATIONââ¬â¢) Hickââ¬â¢s defence is that religious language is a commitment to something which will happen in the future, and so it cannot be verified now (e. g. decimals of ? not yet discovered). He tells the parable of the Celestial City (p. 26). He discusses problems with knowing in an afterlife whether religion has indeed been verified, but clearly it could be. Suppose, for example, that we confronted God, and were overwhelmed by his love? Such faith in the future may be open to other objections (ââ¬Ëwhy believe this? ââ¬â¢), but the claim seems at least to be meaningful (just like Aristotleââ¬â¢s problem about the truth today of ââ¬Ëthere will be a sea fight tomorrowââ¬â¢), because Hick has shown that there is some (future) evidence which is relevant. Minimum reading: The Existence of God (ed. J. Hick) pp. 217-220, 225-27, 239-41, 258-60.

Chapter 9 Homework: Substance Use Disorder Tanya Varkey Psychology 270 March 11th, 2014 Chapter 9 Homework: Substance Use Disorder Substance use disorder is a condition in which an individual depends on a substance, harming his or her mental health. In such a disorder, the continued use of the substance can affect a personââ¬â¢s normal functioning in correlation with the society. For example, the overuse of the substance leads to behavioral issues, which in turn, causes the person to fail in meeting the standards of work and or family matters. Substance intoxication refers to the state of being high due to the effect of the psychoactive substance used. The substance can be either a stimulant, increasing activity level, or a depressant which tends to slow down a personsââ¬â¢ activity level as well as awareness. Such substances are abused because individuals feel that they will be able to avoid uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms (Rosenberg and Kosslyn, 2011). Itsââ¬â¢ negative cognitive effects such as not thinking properly nor having proper judgment can make a big impact upon an individualsââ¬â¢ abilit y to perform activities of daily living. Depressants is a category of drugs that individuals with substance use disorder consume. A depressant drug abuse can impede the activity of the central nervous system, causing decreased awareness and reduced activity of the brain (Rosenberg and Kosslyn, 2011). Tolerance and withdrawal are symptoms that depressant users display if the substance is used on a regular basis or even if it is discontinued (Rosenberg and Kosslyn, 2011). Examples of depressants include alcohol and types of sedative-hypnotic drugs such as benzodiazepines and barbiturates. Sedative-hypnotic drugs such as barbiturates and b... ... where the person experiences a blackout, meaning they are not able to recall what happened while he or she was drunk. In terms of treatment, abstinence is the main goal. Cognitive behavioral therapy is also provided in that it may eventually lead the person to understand that such an alcohol abuse can have several consequences leading to a harmful health. In terms of application, there is an Indian actress named Silk Smitha. Due to the fact that she was not a successful producer, had financial difficulties, as well as romantic issues, she eventually slipped into depression. Such a depressive personal life led her to be a constant abuser of alcohol. She believed that this substance abuse will help her out mentally so no medical treatment and help was sought. As time progressed, her depression and dependence on alcohol grew, eventually leading her to commit suicide.

The History of the Boston Massacre
I was interested in the Boston Massacre and found many testimonies and other primary resources there. However, as I read through I was intrigued by a comment in my readings about Captain Thomas Prestonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"London Letterâ⬠. In Prestonââ¬â¢s letter to London, he intended only Londoners to read it and when the article was later published in the Boston Gazette it added annoyance to the already frustrated public in Boston. I was now, intrigued and determined to find Captain Prestonââ¬â¢s newspaper article. I, then, asked for help from the research and technology desk. They guided me through the library database to find a website called American Historical Newspapers. They had many articles from 1700-1850 and I was able to find the actual article, with Captain Prestonââ¬â¢s recollection of the ââ¬Å"unhappy affairâ⬠(Prestonââ¬â¢s quote), posted in the Boston Gazette from June 25th 1770, as well as, the original letter to London first published, in April 2 8th, in the London newspaper the Essex Gazette. Originally this article was a letter sent by Captain Thomas Preston, to London intended for ââ¬Å"His Majestyâ⬠the king. The letter was delivered to the Essex Gazette, a London newspaper, and printed in April 28th 1770.Captain Preston produced this account of what came to be known as the Boston Massacre, after being jailed and accused of ordering his men to ââ¬Å"fire on a crowd of angry townspeopleâ⬠. Two months later, (the amount of time it takes to get to America from London by ship) the Boston Gazette published Captain Prestonââ¬â¢s article under the headline, ââ¬Å"A Narrative of the Late Transactions at Boston. â⬠During the trial of Captain Preston and his soldiers, copies of ââ¬Å"A Narrative of the Late Transactions at Bostonâ⬠began to circulate around Boston and surrounding areas.Captain Prestonââ¬â¢s descriptions of the events were biased and unsympathetic to the townspeople, painting a pictur e of the soldiers trying to do their job and the townspeople not abiding and being ââ¬Å"unrulyâ⬠and ââ¬Å"abusiveâ⬠. Captain Preston declares that leading up to the incident the townspeople had increasingly ââ¬Å"provoked and abused the soldiersâ⬠. Furthermore, Preston explains that an informant had warned him that there was a ââ¬Å"mobâ⬠of angry townspeople that were planning to storm his soldierââ¬â¢s barracks ââ¬Å"carry off a soldier and murder himâ⬠.Preston goes so far as to pin the guilt of giving the order to shoot by yelling ââ¬Å"fire, fireâ⬠on members of the ââ¬Å"unruly mobâ⬠and assures the reader that he was yelling ââ¬Å"donââ¬â¢t fireâ⬠. Captain Preston never deviates from the staunch defense of his innocence and the threat to himself and his soldierââ¬â¢s lives throughout his entire narrative. Prestonââ¬â¢s article being published in the Essex Gazette reveals that he is attempting to rally support for hi s innocence, from not only the king but all of London too. When the Boston Gazette printed the article they did not change the words of Captain Prestonââ¬â¢s letter to London. They instead must have realized their audience, the Boston public, would receive Captain Prestonââ¬â¢s description of the events much differently than the king or the people of London did. However, the Boston Gazette editor does put a negative introduction of the article at the top of Captain Prestonââ¬â¢s letter to London, stating ââ¬Å"how greatly the conduct of the town has been misrepresented. â⬠This quote reveals the stark contrast of interpretation of the letter between the king of England and the Boston public. Both newspapers print the same article but have two completely different audiences with two completely different opinions of the need for British troops in Boston. The American Promise text, uses a more comprehensive approach when explaining the events of the Boston Massacre. The te xt gives more information about the transactions between the Bostonians and the soldiers leading up to the bloodshed on March 5th, 1770. For example, the soldiers are explained as ââ¬Å"grating on the nerves of the Bostoniansâ⬠by conducting drills on the town Common and ââ¬Å"playing loud music on the Sabbathâ⬠, a day of rest and contemplation for the townspeople.Furthermore, during this time, colonists were beginning to assert their independence from England by boycotting trade with the Nonconsumption Agreements in 1768 and the Virginia Resolves in 1765. This period of time in the colonies is glutted with conflict between the uncompromising rule of the monarchy of England and the desire for representation and independence of the colonies. These two aforementioned Captain Prestonââ¬â¢s recollection of the events were, like all peoples point of view, biased and sympathetic to oneself. The Bostonians had a contrasting interpretation of the events. And the textbook seems to collect all of these opinions and present them the best that it can. By reading Captain Prestonââ¬â¢s primary document about the Boston Massacre, one can get a deeper understanding of what his emotional response was to the events. Reading someoneââ¬â¢s opinion of an event draws the reader into the authorââ¬â¢s point of view for a few moments and allows one to begin to understand what it must have felt like for the author. Primary documents have are a great way to step back in time and look at the world through someone elseââ¬â¢s eyes. Someone who has grown up in a different place with different rules and standards.

Russia’s Economic Future
Russia's economic future Nowadays, Americans always come up with the rise of China and India as new economic powerhouses on the global stage. Itââ¬â¢s easy to forget that another superpower in Asia ââ¬â Russia ââ¬â occupied the central spot in our nationââ¬â¢s foreign policy consciousness for almost five decades after World War II. But Russia still matters. In August, global wheat prices surged to two-year highs after Prime Minister Vladimir Putin announced a ban on exports due to weather-driven supply shortages there. And the country remains a dominant supplier of oil and natural gas to the world market. Unlike China, however, the former Soviet Union has not been nearly as successful in making the transition from the communist era to a more market-based economy. According to Russia expert Bruce Parrott, not even the Russians are sure just what they want to be going forward. Although, the Russian economy faces serious challenges.Russian industry is not likely to regain a n important role in a global economy that demands peak efficiency. Consequently, the export of primary commodities and raw materials is likely to remain the bulwark of economic development. Primary commodity markets are relatively more susceptible to fluctuations than are industrial markets. Russia is likely to continue to be influenced by economic trends that it cannot control.International investors, including the major investment banks, commercial investors, and companies interested in expanding their businesses in world markets have remained on the sidelines, scared off by Russia's long-standing problems with capital flight, reliance on barter transactions, corruption of government officials, and fears of organized crime. The Russian government and leading economists in the country have developed an agreement on the need for various kinds of administrative changes.Failures such as corruption are not moral failures, but a failure of administrative structure. There is a consensus that the country needs to strengthen the institutional and legal underpinnings of a market economy. Improving the legal and regulatory structure would provide a reliable framework for improving governance, strengthening the rule of law, reducing corruption, and attracting the long-term capital needed for deep restructuring and sustained growth. The country also needs to improve its tax system to encourage greater tax compliance and a realistic appreciation in the opulation that the people must pay for the costs of a modern society. The government must avoid pressures to use central bank money to finance its budget deficit. Further reforms are needed in the banking sector, including a legal framework to make it easier to close down troubled banks. Any measures aiming to reduce poverty levels among workers are primarily associated with the increase in the official wages drawn by the lower paid workers, the majority of which are women, and also with the identification and taxation of i ncome in Russia's informal sector.A positive sign was that in mid-year 2000, the Russian government adopted an official development strategy for the period 2000-10. The strategy identified economic policy directed at ensuring equal conditions of market competition, protecting ownership rights, eliminating administrative barriers to entrepreneurship, making the economy more open, and carrying out tax reform. The strategy identified the creation of an effective state performing the function of a guarantor of external and internal security and also of social, political, and economic stability. The strategy spoke of a ââ¬Å"new social contractâ⬠between the more active sections of Russian society and the reformed government. Analysts of Credit Suisse bank believe that in the next 10 years the Russian economy will grow by more than 60 per cent. They base their forecast on the Russian abundant natural resources, the active development of its energy infrastructure, as well as on the c ountry's strong scientific and technological base in certain industrial sectors. We foresee a bright future for the Russian economy, and we forecast an increase of 4. 9 per cent in 2011 and of 4. 6 per cent in 2012, said the Credit Suisse bank analysts. They believe that the Russian economy will thereafter be growing by 5 per cent annually and they believe that the major reason for the increase in the Russian economy is due to the well developed oil sector, which is still developing steadily.Head of the Russian Academy of Sciences' institute of economy's center for comparative study of transitional processes, Leonid Bardomsky has this to say about the forecast of the Swiss analysts: ââ¬Å"The Swiss analysts have made a conservative forecast, taking into account that in the last decade the Russian GDP has doubled. The experts have cautiously predicted an increase of 60 per cent, in view of the fluctuation of oil prices on the global market, where there is the expectation of an increa se of 60 per cent which is normal for the sector.Income from oil can guarantee the mentioned 60 per cent increase, but reaching 100 per cent will require the development of nanotechnologyâ⬠, said Bardomsky. He believes that the Swiss bank has no trust in this and hence its conservative forecast is based on global extraneous developments. Meanwhile, Russia's economy has many problems also. For example, it remains very vulnerable to external shocks and has not yet been able to develop a stable base for continued growth and poverty reduction. While the data are not yet sufficient to carefully assess the impact of the economic recovery on the enterprise sector, it appears that the rebound in the non-oil/gas traded goods sector has so far been driven by the real depreciation of the ruble and the greater availability of capital. Furthermore, there are indications that industrial growth is beginning to slow. Therefore, maintaining a realistic exchange rate, while controlling inflation, must remain a policy priority for sustaining the recovery and future growth of the real economy. Strong fiscal discipline needs to be maintained.A large swing factor is, of course, the level of capital flight, the reduction of which depends on progressive improvement in the investment climate in Russia. Finally, over the longer-term, Russia's deteriorating infrastructure is a matter of concern. Russia's basic public infrastructureââ¬âincluding roads, bridges, railways, ports, housing, and public facilities such as schools and hospitalsââ¬âwas built during the Soviet period. After independence, investment in maintenance and new construction of public infrastructure has fallen dramatically.Russia's aging physical plant is likely to become an increasing constraint to growth unless an improved investment climate can ensure substantially higher levels of investments than is presently the case. According to these problems, Russia should diversify its economy and not rely solely o n oil and gas if it wants to achieve a significant breakthrough; it should continue to keep the ruble weak in relation to other world currencies, to get the best from, the export of its raw materials. The Managing Director of the Department of Global markets of The New York-Mellon Bank, Michael Wolfork, says that in the first half of the New Year, prices of the Russian raw materials will increase as a result of high demands, and it will come about due to the lower exchange rate of the ruble against the dollar. European countries, the U. S and Japan will be buying more Russian goods if the ruble remains weak, said Wolfork. I think the world wants Russia to have a strong economy, to bring benefits not only to Russians, but also to the rest of the world. If the potential of the Russian economy increases, the economies of the rest of the world will likewise be boosted. Financial experts believe that by 2030, the Russian economy will become the strongest in Europe, and this view is backed by experts of Price Water House Cooper in a report circulated in the City of London, the financial center of Britain. It is believed by experts that by 2030, the Russian economy will become the 5th strongest in the world.

The Early History of the Internet
The Early History of the Internet On a cold war kind of day in 1969, work began on ARPAnet, the grandfather to the Internet. Designed as a computer version of the nuclear bomb shelter, ARPAnet protected the flow of information between military installations by creating a network of geographically separated computers that could exchange information via a newly developed technology called NCP or Network Control Protocol. ARPAà stands for the Advanced Research Projects Agency, a branch of the military that developed top secret systems and weapons during the Cold War. But Charles M. Herzfeld, the former director of ARPA, stated that ARPAnet was not created due to military needs and that it ââ¬Å"came out of our frustration that there were only a limited number of large, powerful research computers in the country and that many research investigators who should have access were geographically separated from them.à Originally, there were only four computers connected when ARPAnet was created. They were located in the respective computer research labs of UCLA (Honeywell DDP 516 computer), Stanford Research Institute (SDS-940 computer), University of California, Santa Barbara (IBM 360/75) and the University of Utah (DEC PDP-10). The first data exchange over this new network occurred between computers at UCLA and the Stanford Research Institute. On their first attempt to log into Stanfords computer by typing log win, UCLA researchers crashed their computer when they typed the letter g. As the network expanded, different models of computers were connected, which created compatibility problems. The solution rested in a better set of protocols called TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) that were designed in 1982. The protocol worked by breaking data into IP (Internet Protocol) packets, like individually addressed digital envelopes. TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) then makes sure the packets are delivered from client to server and reassembled in the right order. Under ARPAnet, several major innovations occurred. Some examples areà emailà (or electronic mail), a system that allows for simple messages to be sent to another person across the network (1971), telnet, a remote connection service for controlling a computer (1972) and file transfer protocol (FTP), which allows information to be sent from one computer to another in bulk (1973). And as non-military uses for the network increased, more and more people had access and it was no longer safe for military purposes. As a result, MILnet, a military only network, was started in 1983. Internet Protocol software was soon being placed on every type of computer. Universities and research groups also began using in-house networks known asà Local Area Networksà or LANs. These in-house networks then started using Internet Protocol software so one LAN could connect with other LANs. In 1986, one LAN branched out to form a new competing network called NSFnet (National Science Foundationà Network). NSFnet first linked together the five national supercomputer centers, then every major university. Over time, it started to replace the slower ARPAnet, which was finally shutdown in 1990. NSFnet formed the backbone of what we call the Internet today. Hereââ¬â¢s a quote from the U.S. Department report The Emerging Digital Economy: The Internets pace of adoption eclipses all other technologies that preceded it. Radio was in existence 38 years before 50 million people tuned in; TV took 13 years to reach that benchmark. Sixteen years after the first PC kit came out, 50 million people were using one. Once it was opened to the general public, the Internet crossed that line in four years.

A Moral Dilemma Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
A Moral Dilemma - Assignment Example In addition, education also causes people from different backgrounds to interact and socialize. In this way, education works to promote diversity and intrapersonal understanding among human beings. People from different backgrounds meet and socialize in learning institutions where individuals learn socialization skills, which also enhance problem-solving abilities. From the above perspectives, education is an important aspect of human right that everyone should obtain up to the highest level possible. With regard to the moral dilemma scenario above, the girl was right in making the steps she undertook in various ways. To begin with, education is a fundamental part of life that promotes enlightenment of individuals about world issues (Cox & Klinger, 2004). Education brings about exposure and enables understanding of general environmental concepts unknown to uneducated persons. Adequate understanding of various global concepts is important in fostering and enhancing problem solving and decision-making skills of individual learners (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2013). The move by the parents to prevent their daughter from continuing with her education in favor of caring for the younger siblings would hamper the girl from gaining the knowledge about various world concepts. Education is an important tool in enhancing individualsââ¬â¢ and social security. Through education, a person is able to gain sufficient self-awareness and self-concept, which are important in enabling nurturing individualsââ¬â¢ relation with the environment and other people (Ungar, 2011).
